What's on in Majorca this Summer?

Majorca. The very name conjures up heavenly images of golden beaches, sun-dappled squares and steaming plates of paella. This beautiful Spanish island might seem like a tiny speck in the Mediterranean compared to the mainland, but what it lacks in square mileage, it certainly makes up for in diversity.

To coin a well-used phrase, there's something for everyone in Majorca. In fact, there really is. Whether you're into hiking and biking, rock festivals and big-name nightclubs, or laid-back family fun on pine-fringed beaches, you'll find it all in this sunny corner of the Balearic Islands.

To prove our point, we've scoured Majorca's busy social calendar and picked out a handful of events to showcase the sheer versatility of this cracking island. Some are big well-known dates in the diary, others a little less so. And if you've got more to add, we're all ears! So dust off your Spanish lingo, ditch the beach for a day (it'll still be there tomorrow) and head off to explore some of Majorca's first-rate festivals.

Here are some favourites:

Mallorca Rocks - June-September

Forget drizzly festivals in the UK. If you love rock music, sunshine and holidays, Mallorca Rocks will be right up your street. This summer, you can rock out to the tunes of Franz Ferdinand, Dizzee Rascal, Beady Eye and Biffy Clyro, at separate gigs in Magaluf's Mallorca Rocks hotel over the summer. The hotel is right in the thick of the action so expect one long holiday party. Who needs sleep anyway?

La Patrona Festival - May, August

Slip away to the charming town of Pollensa, and you could be forgiven for thinking you've stepped back in time, especially when hoards of wooden sword-waving Moorish pirates descend upon the streets to commence battle with the locals. Fear not, this isn't the 16th century - but it is a re-enactment of what happened back in 1550, when the Christians defended their town against attack and sent the pirates scurrying back to their ships. It's a lively, boisterous affair and a great way to soak up the Majorcan spirit.

The rural town of Binissalem is famous for its madcap celebration of wine. The 'Festa des Vermar' is the annual grape harvest and it goes much further than collecting the fruit of the vines. Expect traditional grape-treading contests, parades, wine tasting, celebrations and a seriously messy grape battle. Madcap fun that's not to be missed. Check out this post on SeeMallorca to find out more.
