Castle Neuschwanstein – A fairy tale castle for a fairy tale King in Bavaria, Germany

Rising majestically above Germany's Alps in Bavaria, is one of the most spectacular and breathtaking castles in the world – Castle Neuschwanstein – a fairy tale fortress for the “Fairy Tale King.” King Ludwig II ordered the design and construction of the one of today’s most visited and recognized castles in the world and although Castle Neuschwanstein appears to be centuries old and born of the Middle Ages, construction began relatively recently in 1868. Actually, it opened 1886, just a few years before the Eiffel Tower. Did you know some of the interior spaces have never been completed?

Neuschwanstein and Castle Hohenschwangau – where Ludwig grew up – lie in the mountains above the village of Hohenschwangau. Read more about this fascinating fortress, its history, and how to travel there. Plus great slide show and if you have Google Earth, you'll want to check out the link in the article as well.

Auf Wiedersehen!

  10. Have always wanted to visit here...but more for its more modern history. It was one of the places where the Nazis stored looted art from France, which has always intrigued me.
